- Appel
Veracity is a tiefling that accompanied the party into the lost city of Arnor.
Appearance & Personality
Veracity is an elderly tiefling with purple skin.
When the party met Veracity, she struck up friendly conversation and claimed to be interested in Astoran history. However, her actual knowledge of Astoran history appears more limited than she represented.
After it became clear that Veracity had manipulated the party, she dropped her original demeanor and showed no remorse in stealing the compass, or in kidnapping and killing Nora. She made sarcastic, mocking comments to Blitz and Appel while she escaped on a griffon. When the party managed to knock her colleague, Huon, off of the griffon, she did not go back for him.
Story
Arnor Arc
The party met Veracity in Appelton. She claimed to be a fellow adventurer. Riding the high of a particularly successful improv troupe bit, Appel decided to disguise himself as an old man named “Virtue de Appel” and inexplicably began flirting with Veracity.
The party learned that Veracity was researching Astoran history and knew the whereabouts of the lost city of Arnor, but could not travel by herself. They agreed to travel with her as a guide. On the way there, the party asked Veracity about their surroundings and its associated history, but Veracity would only respond with generalities. The party did not question this. When Veracity urged them to reach Arnor castle as fast as possible, they complied; after all, she was their guide.
Eventually, the party reached Arnor and found the final compass piece. Suddenly, Veracity revealed that she was actually a powerful monk secretly working for Mira, before stunning and kidnapping Nora (who now held all of the Compass pieces). Huon then joined Veracity in a tense battle against the party, in which Veracity threw Nora down a set of stairs, killing her. Eventually, Veracity managed to escape on a griffon, but the party was able to prevent Huon from doing the same.
After reviving Nora and speaking with Huon, Appel and Mila wrote a letter to Mira throwing Veracity and the Order of the Seal under the bus in order to safeguard Mila’s position within the Solithian church.
Nova Arc
At brunch with Mo and Destiny, the party learned that Veracity is Destiny’s mother and Mo’s grandmother. Destiny explained that she ran away from the Order of the Seal and cut her mother off, partially due to Veracity's singleminded focus on the Order's goals, and high expectations for her daughter.
Later, Mira confirmed to Appel that Veracity went against her orders when she killed Nora. However, it is unknown if Veracity faced any consequences for her actions.
Trivia
- While some tieflings are named after virtues, Veracity’s choice of pseudonym is rather ironic, as Veracity means truthfulness.
- Thanks to the proposal of a cross-campaign tiefling family tree, Veracity is actually also the grandmother of Scinti, a character of Fang’s from the campaign Junk City.
- It is unknown if Veracity shares her daughter's maiden name (Damaia), or if Destiny adopted the surname after cutting ties with her family.
