Rhea Lwomyn was Appel's first and last “girlfriend”.
Appearance & Personality
Rhea’s character is mostly limited to the text found in her letters. In general, Rhea writes with an eerie demeanor, making strange emphases upon the fact that she is a woman and Appel is a man. At times, Rhea inexplicably lapses into misogynist explanations for her own behavior. All of these circumstances raise suspicion that “Rhea” is not really a woman at all.
Some of Rhea’s letters take an urgent tone, featuring demands for money and unconvincing attempts at romance. Others portray Rhea as more believably smitten, but still weave in requests for money.
Supposedly, Rhea is incredibly powerful in combat.
Story
Backstory
When other soldiers began to suspect Appel of being gay, Appel decided to deflect suspicion by finding a girlfriend. He found a personal ad listed on a military message board from Rhea Lwomyn, who was seemingly a normal woman looking for a male partner to romance. Appel, failing to realize the message was obviously written by a catfish trying to swindle unsuspecting suitors of funds, wrote back to Rhea, and a “relationship” formed. Appel, thinking her requests for money were just endearing jokes, never actually paid Rhea. Rhea and Appel never met in person.
Kingsglade Arc
The party fled Kingsglade, pursued by Solithian guards. On the way out, they ran into Augusta. Appel lied and claimed he had been sent by Augusta’s older brother, Gustav, but that a misunderstanding happened and the guards were chasing after the party. Surprisingly, Augusta replied that she already knew this, because her brother sent her a letter, and eagerly agreed to help slow down their pursuers. This surprised Appel, but quickly went forgotten in the commotion of the party’s escape.
It wasn’t until much later that the party learned the letter from “Gustav” was actually forged. Augusta complained that she had been grounded for listening to it, and accused Appel of the forgery. However, upon closer examination, Appel discovered the handwriting matched that of Rhea. He did not know what to make of this.
Sha Arc
On the party’s travels from Sha to Tower, they wandered into a Solithian military camp that had been laid to waste. Not a single surviving soldier remained. All of the party felt incredibly uneasy.
Among the wreckage was a letter addressed to Appel from Rhea, who took credit for the carnage and expressed a vested interest in seeing the party succeed at their quest. Panicked at the extent of her power and bloodlust, Appel decided to end his relationship with Rhea. He worried that breaking up with Rhea outright might provoke her to seek revenge, so Appel decided to ghost her. Even so, Nora took interest in the fact that Appel’s girlfriend would be a powerful ally.
Order of the Sword Arc
After Appel went through Aspen’s belongings, he found a letter from someone named “Jen Yewingurl”, addressed to Appel’s former classmate Cadet Borples. Realizing that Jen and Rhea were both just fake identities belonging to Aspen, Appel confronted Aspen and told him they needed to break up.
Trivia
- Rhea Lwomyn and Jen Yewingurl are poorly disguised homonyms for Real Woman and Genuine Girl.
