Mimi Contretype

Mimi is a shopkeeper who sells questionably obtained magic items from her store, which is located inside a demiplane. Though her prices and demeanor are sometimes outrageous, she has helped the party on multiple occassions by providing magic items, Gatorade, and the ability to fast-travel across Home through her shop's many magic doors. She was cursed by the same wizard as Hei.

Appearance & Personality

As a doppelganger, Mimi can shapeshift at will, but her usual appearance has bright pink hair in a bob cut with two longer, braided sections, and green eyes. She also has bright pink cat ears and a tail. Aside from the haircut and cat features, she is identical to Lily Evenwood. Due to Guy's curse on her, Mimi has cat ears and a tail in whatever form she shapeshifts into, although they change color to match her hair.

During her time as a student at Tower Academy, Mimi used a different appearance. This form had short, messy brown hair, her signature braids, and large round glasses. It is unknown whose appearance Mimi originally copied this from.

In her true form, Mimi has gray, hairless skin, and glowing yellow eyes. This form also includes her cat ears and tail, making her somewhat resemble a gray Sphynx cat.

Mimi is generally cheerful and upbeat. Although she usually doesn't hesitate to say what she's thinking, she is also a surprisingly private person, as she kept all of the details of her past a secret from the party. Mimi is an incredibly selfish person: she routinely overcharges the party, and is unremorseful about ruining Guy's life. However, she has also shown genuine loyalty to those she considers friends, such as when trying to protect Cade from the party's anger, and when helping the party to rescue Appel.

Story

Backstory

Mimi was a freshman at Tower Academy in the same year as Guy, Cade, and Lily. Due to the steep tuition costs, she began illegally dealing in magical items to make money. To protect herself from discovery, she did all of this while assuming the appearance of Guy. She presumably picked him as her scapegoat due to jealousy, as he was dating her crush, Lily.

At some point, Mimi also began using her disguise to go on dates with an oblivious Lily. She continued this charade for most of the school year, until "Guy's" illegal activities were discovered. Enraged over losing his scholarship, Guy managed to figure out that Mimi was the true culprit and confronted her. During this confrontation, he cursed Mimi, causing her to permanently have cat ears. Mimi then dropped out of the Academy and fled, leaving Guy unable to prove his innocence.

After dropping out, Mimi created her demiplane, as well as hidden doors leading to it in several major cities. She also began using Lily's appearance, although she cut her hair into her signature style.

In the Campaign

The party originally encountered Mimi in Mistport, where she granted them entrance to her shop after learning Hei was also cursed by Guy. They were unaware that her store was not physically located in Mistport until they encountered her again in Kingsglade. During this visit, they learned that they could travel through Mimi's shop to any of her doors they had previously been through, effectively allowing them to teleport between locations (although Mimi made sure to mention they would have to pay for each trip).

The party discovered another door to Mimi's shop in Sha, where she gave them information on one of her customers, Aifread, as well as revealing she had once done business with a monk in black robes (presumably a member of the Order of the Eternal Sword). While the party was in Sha, Mimi also began selling Gatorade, which Appel had previously requested from her.

When the party reached Tower, they learned of Mimi's true identity and her history with Guy. They also located a door to her shop in Tower, but chose not to confront her about her past. During subsequent visits, Mimi and Hei's relationship became strained due to his developing feelings for Guy. Mimi ceased to give Hei a discount on using her doors for teleportation after this, but otherwise continued doing business with the party.

After Appel was kidnapped by Rin, Mimi allowed the rest of the party to attempt to use her door to teleport to Nova, despite them not having been through the Nova door before. Doing this dealt immense damage to the party, but allowed them to get to Nova in time to rescue Appel.

In Session 98 it was finally confirmed that Mimi is seeing Mo, although she vehemently turned down Hei's invitation to go on a double date with him and Guy.

Trivia

• Outside of the game, Mimi's name is often abbreviated to "Mimi C.", a play on the word "mimic".
• A "contretype" is a photo negative, hinting at Mimi's appearance being copied from someone else.
• Mimi's cat ears curse is intended to make her recognizable as a "copycat", even if she changes her appearance.
• Notable items from Mimi's store include Blitz's scythe, Georga's journal, and the "gay elf vase".
